In the indigenous Aymara community of Sorata, La Paz and El Alto, Bolivia, a co-operative of over 150 women and their families use a drop spindle to turn alpaca and sheep’s wool into yarn. This yarn is dyed with natural vegetable dyes from local plants and insects using age old customs that has revived the community’s ancient cultural identity.

The income generated from this project has supported programs on literacy and health, taught creativity workshops in state children’s homes and funded a children’s hearing program, as well as giving its artisans and their families a positive outlook for the future and the means to live a healthy life.

The use of natural dyes in not only environmentally friendly but also non toxic and kind to the skin. All dies are natural except blues, a color that is hard to consistently obtain.
