Down to Earth Ceramics

Bio

Pottery has been part of my life for 18 years. It seems that no matter where I live or what my profession, I seek out clay. To have my hands in it. To make pots. There's something about the organic nature of clay—the texture, smell, the way it moves under my fingers—that helps ground me. To me, clay is an extraordinarily honest medium, able to reflect my very mood and frame of mind. When I'm focused and mindful, I do my best work. If I'm not centered, then neither is my pot. It's a fascinating relationship.

My passion is functional pottery, whether it's a bowl or platter, cup or bottle. Like most potters, I get the greatest sense of satisfaction when a finished piece is finally holding the food or drink it was intended for. My forms tend to be simple and uncomplicated, and so only when they finally sit on a table, complemented by the color and texture of food, are my pots complete.

I divide my time between creating work on the wheel and hand building. I use both white and red stoneware and usually fire to cone 10 in a gas reduction kiln, although occasionally I'll participate in a salt, soda, or wood fire. And while I experiment with a range of glazes—from the Temmoku and shino families, to various shades of weathered yellows, greens and blues—they each provide the earthy, natural colors and rustic textures I'm looking for.
